GOAT Series: George Weah

George Weah is a Liberian former professional footballer and current President of Liberia. He is considered one of the greatest African players of all time and is the only African player to have won the FIFA World Player of the Year award, and the first non-European player to win the "ballon d'or" in 1995.

Weah began his professional career in his home country of Liberia, playing for clubs such as Invincible Eleven and Mighty Barrolle. He quickly made a name for himself as a powerful and skillful striker, and in 1985, he moved to Cameroon to play for Tonnerre Yaoundé. He spent two seasons with the club, winning the Cameroonian league championship in both seasons.

In 1987, Weah moved to Europe to play for the French club AS Monaco. He spent four seasons with the club, and during that time, he won the French league championship in 1988 and the French Cup in 1991. He also helped Monaco reach the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992.

Weah's performances in France caught the attention of Italian club AC Milan, and in 1995, he transferred to the club for a then-record transfer fee of $19 million. He spent four seasons with Milan, winning the Italian league championship in 1996 and 1999, and the Italian Super Cup in 1996. He also helped Milan reach the final of the UEFA Champions League in 1995.

Weah's performances on the field earned him numerous individual awards, including the African Footballer of the Year award in 1989, 1994, and 1995, the French Footballer of the Year award in 1988 and 1992, the Italian Footballer of the Year award in 1996, and the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 1995.

After retiring from football, Weah turned his attention to politics. He ran for President of Liberia in 2005 but was defeated in the run-off election by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. He ran again in 2011, and this time was successful, and he was sworn in as President of Liberia in January 2018.

As President, Weah has focused on improving the country's infrastructure, including building new roads, bridges, and hospitals. He has also worked to improve the country's education system and has launched a number of initiatives to combat poverty and unemployment.

Despite the challenges of leading a country that has been ravaged by years of civil war and economic turmoil, Weah has remained committed to improving the lives of Liberians. His leadership and determination have earned him widespread support, and he is considered a hero and role model by many people in Liberia and around the world.

Overall, George Weah is a remarkable figure in the history of football and politics, he has been an inspiration to many and his legacy will forever be remembered. He is a true leader who has dedicated his life to serving his people and nation. He is a true representation of what a leader should be, selfless, dedicated, and determined.
