Houston, under the guidance of Coach Kelvin Sampson, has been impressive, particularly in December. Despite early-season struggles, the Cougars have not given up more than 51 points in any game since their last loss, showcasing their defensive strength. This consistency has earned them a top spot in the rankings, slightly ahead of Iowa State.
Iowa State, led by T.J. Otzelberger, has also been highly impressive, with their only loss being a close two-point defeat to Auburn in the Maui Invitational. The Cyclones' strong performance makes them a strong contender in the Big 12.
Kansas, the preseason No. 1 team, has faced some challenges. Back-to-back losses to Creighton and Missouri have exposed some flaws, but with a star-studded roster and Hunter Dickinson leading the team, they remain in contention for the Big 12 title and a national championship.
Texas Tech, under Grant McCasland, boasts one of the top offensive teams in the nation. However, their lack of wins in Quad 1/2 opportunities has kept them from a higher ranking.
Other teams, such as Kansas State and Oklahoma State, are facing their own challenges. Kansas State's big transfer portal additions have not yet lived up to expectations, while Oklahoma State is performing as expected but lacks the talent to compete strongly in the Big 12.
