AFL Community Camps: Inspiring Future Stars

The AFL has unveiled the schedule for the 2025 AFL Community Camps program, which will see teams visiting regional communities across Australia during the pre-season. This initiative involves over 700 AFL players engaging with fans, visiting junior clubs, schools, and hospitals, and participating in clinics and community events aimed at inspiring the next generation and recognizing local heroes.

Melbourne was the first team to kick off their Community Camp, visiting Mansfield and its surrounding areas in late November 2024. Following them, Essendon made their way to Gisborne, Castlemaine, and Bendigo on December 2-3. In New South Wales, the Sydney Swans will connect with fans in the Sydney Harbour region, while the GWS GIANTS will head to Canberra. The Adelaide Crows are set to visit Port Pirie and its surroundings, and Port Adelaide will explore the Barossa and Clare Valley.

Victorian teams will cover various locations, including Ballarat, Bendigo, Warragul, Wangaratta, and the Mornington Peninsula, while Tasmania will host Hawthorn. In Western Australia, Fremantle recently visited the Pilbara, and West Coast is scheduled to visit areas of Perth and Bunbury in February.

Rob Auld, AFL Executive General Manager of Game Development, emphasized the importance of these camps for engaging local communities and fostering grassroots growth of the game. He noted that many of the league's greatest players began their journeys in remote and regional towns, often at small local clubs supported by dedicated volunteers. The camps aim to connect elite AFL players with community members and give back to those who are passionate about football.

Since their inception in 2003, the camps have reached over one million children through school and club visits across Australia over the past 20 years. The 2025 AFL Community Camp Schedule includes various dates and locations such as Port Pirie on January 16, Sunshine Coast in January, Springfield/Ipswich in February, and more.

Carlton co-vice captain Jacob Weitering also discussed the team’s pre-season training, highlighting a successful match simulation block at La Trobe University. He praised the foundation laid during the pre-Christmas training and noted the players' impressive performances, especially following changes in the high-performance staff. The team is motivated by the disappointments of the previous season and is focused on building a strong foundation for the upcoming year.
