Holland menjadi assisten Southgate sejak awal menjadi pelatih Inggris. Sebelum menjadi bagian dari staff Southgate, Holland punya pengalaman memenangkan sejumlah gelar sebagai asisten pelatih Chelsea.
"Pertama, saya tidak bisa melakukannya tanpa dia. Dia menyeimbangkanku. Kekuatannya menutupi kelemahanku. Dia sangat teliti dalam persiapannya," ujar Southgate dikutip dari Mirror.
"Kami telah menjadi sangat dekat. Kepercayaan di antara kami sangat besar dan saya tidak bisa memiliki orang yang lebih baik di samping saya. Dia telah memenangkan Liga Champions, dia telah memenangkan Premier League," jelasnya.
Bisikan-bisikan Holland dianggap banyak pihak membantu Southgate di saat-saat krusial. Hal itu terlihat di laga semifinal saat Inggris mengalahkan Belanda 2-1.
