England Rugby National One Clubs Demand RFU Review

The English rugby scene is embroiled in controversy as clubs from the National One league, the third tier of English rugby, are calling for a comprehensive review of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) management. This demand comes in the wake of a salary and bonus scandal that has sparked widespread outrage.

At the heart of the issue is the revelation that RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney received a total compensation package of £1.1 million last year, including a bonus of £358,000. This is particularly contentious given that the RFU incurred a record loss of £37.9 million and implemented 42 redundancies.

Eleven of the 14 clubs in National One, including founding clubs Blackheath and Richmond, are demanding an independent root-and-branch review of the RFU's management. This move is set against the backdrop of an emergency council meeting called by RFU president Rob Udwin to address the growing discontent, which includes threats of a vote of no confidence in RFU chair Tom Ilube.
