Makhachev Retains Title at UFC 311 with Submission Win

Makhachev retained his lightweight title at UFC 311, while Dvalishvili set a takedown record in his bantamweight defense.

Islam Makhachev successfully defended his lightweight championship at UFC 311, held on January 18, 2025, at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. Makhachev faced Renato Moicano, who stepped in as a last-minute replacement for the injured Arman Tsarukyan. Demonstrating his grappling prowess, Makhachev submitted Moicano, extending his impressive 14-fight win streak and solidifying his status as a dominant champion.

In the co-main event, bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili showcased his striking and endurance against Umar Nurmagomedov. Dvalishvili won by unanimous decision, with judges scoring the bout 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47. He outstruck Nurmagomedov significantly, landing 133 total strikes compared to Nurmagomedov`s 81. Dvalishvili also set a new UFC record for career takedowns, surpassing the legendary Georges St-Pierre, further emphasizing his tactical superiority in the octagon.

Other notable matchups included Jiri Prochazka taking on Jamahal Hill, Jailton Almeida facing Serghei Spivac, and Kevin Holland battling Reinier de Ridder. The event featured a full card, beginning with early prelims at 6 p.m. ET, followed by prelims at 8 p.m. ET, and the main card at 10 p.m. ET. Fans could catch all the action live on ESPN+ in the U.S., TNT Sports in the U.K., and Foxtel`s Main Event in Australia.
