Athletic beat Mallorca on penalties

Athletic Bilbao overcame their string of six straight losses in the Copa del Rey final, defeating Mallorca in a thrilling penalty shootout to snap their 40-year trophy drought.

Alex Berenguer's goal in the 4-2 shootout victory in Seville gave Athletic their 24th Copa del Rey championship, and first since 1984.

It put an end to Athletic's terrible recent run in the competition, during which they lost two finals in as many weeks in 2021, and created joyous scenes at a packed La Cartuja stadium.
