The Number Of Times Ghana Failed To Qualify For AFCON, The Countries That Eliminated Them

Ghana is one of Africa's major forces in the Africa Cup of Nations will not in the 2025 Nations Cup in Morocco after finishing bottom of a group consisting Angola, Niger and Sudan.

 

Ghana made its debut in 1963, and quickly emerged as a powerful team in the tournament and went on to win the tournament again in 1965, 1978 and in 1982, which was the last tournament to date Ghana has won.

 

This will be the first time since 2004 and nine time Ghana has missed an AFCON tournament since making their qualifiers debut in 1962.

 

Ghana have played in 24 editions of the tournament. Only seven-time champions Egypt (26) and defending champions Ivory Coast (25) have appeared in more.

 

1962

 

The first time Ghana failed to qualify for an AFCON tournament was in 1962 when Nigeria denied them after an aggregate score  tied 2-2 after the two matches; Nigeria advanced to the Second Round after drawing lots.

 

1972 and 1974

 

In 1972 and 1974, Ghana were eliminated in the second round by neighbours, Togo and Ivory Coast 

 

 

1976

 

In 1976, the Black Stars were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the second round of qualifiers .

 

1986, 1988, 1990

Ghana’s fortunes dipped again in the mid-1980s. They bowed out to Côte d’Ivoire in the second round of qualifiers for the 1986 AFCON and suffered an upset against Sierra Leone in the 1988 qualifiers. 

 

A 2-1 first-leg loss in Accra and a goalless second leg in Freetown dashed their hopes.

 

In 1990, Ghana’s AFCON dream ended in a penalty shootout loss to Gabon after a 1-1 aggregate tie in the first round of qualifiers

 

2004

In 2004, Ghana was in Group 13 consisting of Rwanda and Uganda. The Black Stars only won a game against Rwanda and drew against Uganda to finish bottom of the group with 4 points while Rwanda qualified for the AFCON with 7 Points.

 

 

2025.

Ghana Black Stars could only manage just three points from six games to sit at the bottom of Group F that consist of Angola, Niger and Sudan.
