On May 13th, Canada witnessed its first-ever professional Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) game at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The hardwood court proudly displayed the WNBA logo at its center as the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx took to the stage.
As a passionate fan, advocate for women's sports, former collegiate athlete, and a Black feminist scholar focusing on the experiences of Black girls in sports, I couldn't afford to miss this historic game. I was fortunate enough to attend, as the tickets sold out on the very day they were released.
This game marked several significant milestones in the league's 27-year history. It became the most-watched preseason WNBA game and set a preseason attendance record with 19,923 spectators.
The game's tremendous success underscores the growing interest in women's sports in Canada and offers hope for the potential expansion of the WNBA league north of the border."
