Birrell Shines at Australian Open 2025

Kimberly Birrell had an impressive Day 6 at the Australian Open 2025, showcasing her talent in both women`s doubles and mixed doubles. Partnering with fellow Australian Olivia Gadecki, the duo advanced to the third round of the women`s doubles by defeating Ulrikke Eikeri and Makoto Ninomiya with a score of 6-3, 7-5. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time since 2017 that an all-Australian women`s pair has reached this stage at Melbourne Park. They are set to face WTA Finals participants Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the next round.

In mixed doubles, Birrell teamed up with John-Patrick Smith, where they secured a victory against Hao-Ching Chan and Marcelo Melo, winning 7-6(5), 6-3. This win propels them into the second round, where they will compete against Demi Schuurs and Tim Puetz.

However, not all Australian players had a successful day. Matthew Ebden and his new partner Joran Vliegen, seeded ninth, faced an early exit in the first round of men`s doubles, losing to Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram. John Peers and Jamie Murray also bowed out in the second round, falling to Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp. Additionally, Marc Polmans and Matthew Romios were defeated by Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten in the second round.

In women`s doubles, Priscilla Hon and Daria Saville were eliminated in the first round by Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini. Destanee Aiava and Maddison Inglis also faced defeat in their first-round match against Marta Kostyuk and Elena-Gabriela Ruse. In mixed doubles, Daria Saville and Luke Saville were ousted in the first round by Irina Khromacheva and Jackson Withrow, with other Australian pairs also experiencing early exits.

Looking ahead, the highly anticipated match between Iga Swiatek and Emma Raducanu is set for the third round of women`s singles on January 18. Swiatek has a strong track record against Raducanu, having won all their previous encounters in straight sets, making this match a must-watch for tennis fans.
