A highlight of the season will be the fifth annual Commissioner's Cup competition, which begins in June. This in-season tournament will see the six Eastern Conference teams and seven Western Conference teams compete in round-robin games to determine the conference leaders. The tournament culminates in a title match on July 1st, with a substantial $500,000 purse at stake.
The 21st annual All-Star Game is scheduled for July 19th at the Indiana Fever's Gainbridge Fieldhouse, showcasing the league's top talent. The opening weekend will feature thrilling matchups, including the Valkyries hosting the LA Sparks on May 16th. Other notable games include the Minnesota Lynx facing the Dallas Wings, who will debut UConn star Paige Bueckers, and a rematch between the last two league champions, the Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty. The Indiana Fever will begin their season against the Chicago Sky on May 17th, with both teams introducing new head coaches.
As the league prepares for the upcoming season, several off-season tasks are underway, including the free agency signing period in February, the draft in April, and the ongoing process of filling coaching vacancies. The league is also negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement with the WNBPA. Notably, the Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever, and Washington Mystics have recently made coaching changes, with the Mystics parting ways with Mike Thibault, the winningest coach in WNBA history, and his son Eric Thibault.
