BILL WALTON, NBA LEGEND, DIES AT 71.

Bill Walton, a double NBA champion and a prominent figure in basketball during the 1970s and 1980s, died on Monday at the age of 71, the NBA announced. The American, who had worked extensively in television after his playing career, died "after a long battle with cancer," the league said in a statement.

As a star center, Walton led the Portland Trailblazers to the 1977 NBA title, the only championship in franchise history, before joining the Clippers (in San Diego from 1979 to 1984, and then in Los Angeles from 1984 to 1985) and finally the Boston Celtics (1985-1988), where he won another title in 1986 alongside the legendary Larry Bird.
