Concerns over council ties with Saudi-backed club

Human rights activists have taken issue with the close ties between a local government and a football team that receives funding from Saudi Arabia.

After money from the Department for Transport delayed, a senior Newcastle City Council staffer wrote to Newcastle United (NUFC) co-owner Amanda Staveley requesting that she press government ministers over Tyne Bridge repairs, according to information obtained by BBC File on 4.

When the club was taken over in 2021, Saudi Arabia's human rights record was brought to light; however, there are worries that a council in need of funding is ignoring it.
