1972
Zes jaar na het verliezen van de WK-titel leidde Beckenbauer het West-Duitse nationale team naar zijn eerste overwinning in het Wembley Stadion, ten koste van Engeland met 3-1, in de kwartfinales van Euro 1972.
Het team werd destijds omschreven als het beste in de Duitse geschiedenis, voordat het de Intercontinentale titel won door de Sovjet-Unie in de finale met 3-0 in Brussel te verslaan.
1974
Het West-Duitse nationale team overwon een schokkende nederlaag in de groepsfase tegen Oost-Duitsland (0/1), op weg naar het winnen van de Wereldbekertitel, na Nederland met 2-1 te hebben verslagen in de finale die plaatsvond in München, en was getuige van een bijzondere confrontatie tussen de twee legendes Beckenbauer en Johan Cruijff.
