Dominic Thiem ends career with first-round loss

In the first round of the Erste Bank Open on Tuesday, Dominic Thiem lost to Luciano Darderi 7-6 (6), 6-2, in his final professional encounter.
After struggling to regain his peak performance after suffering a wrist injury, the 2020 US Open winner had previously declared his intention to retire.
Despite playing in front of a home crowd, the 31-year-old Austrian lost steam after taking a 4-2 lead. He walked out of center court to thunderous cheers.
