Roosters` Sandon Smith Faces Consequences After Accident

Sydney Roosters playmaker Sandon Smith has pleaded guilty to negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm following a severe accident that resulted in a man losing two toes. The incident occurred on March 13, when Smith was driving an Audi A5 out of a driveway in Vaucluse. His view was obstructed by several vehicles and a tree, leading to a chain reaction crash involving a Toyota Kluger and another car, which pinned a man’s foot.

Smith, 22, was on his way to a training session at Allianz Stadium when the accident happened. He immediately tried to lift the car off the man’s foot but needed help from passers-by. The victim spent eight weeks in hospital with multiple broken and fractured bones and lost most of the feeling in his right foot.

In court, Smith's lawyer, David Newham, emphasized that the incident was a `terrible … freakish accident` and that Smith had apologized profusely to the victim. Smith was placed on a two-year conditional release order with no conviction recorded by Magistrate Scott Nash.

Despite this incident, Smith remains a crucial part of the Roosters' team, especially with the departure of veteran playmaker Luke Keary and the long-term injury to regular halfback Sam Walker. Smith is set to take charge of the team’s attack in the upcoming season.
