Ortiz Jr. Outpoints Madrimov to Retain WBC Belt

Vergil Ortiz Jr. outpointed Israil Madrimov to retain his WBC Interim title in Riyadh.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. successfully defended his WBC Interim Super Welterweight title against Israil Madrimov at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fight, part of the Riyadh Season card, concluded with Ortiz Jr. winning by unanimous decision, with judges scoring it 117-111 and 115-113 twice.

Known for his knockout prowess, Ortiz Jr. faced a unique challenge in Madrimov, who was coming off his first career loss to Terence Crawford. The early rounds saw Madrimov employing a cautious strategy, moving frequently and throwing minimal punches. Ortiz Jr. adapted by pursuing his opponent and effectively cutting off the ring. As the bout progressed, Ortiz Jr. began to land significant shots, particularly with his left hook to the body.

In the later rounds, Madrimov sought to engage in more exchanges, but Ortiz Jr. maintained his composure and landed the more impactful punches, securing the victory on the scorecards. This win keeps Ortiz Jr. on track for a potential showdown for the WBC super welterweight title, currently held by Sebastian Fundora. The fight was broadcast live on DAZN as a pay-per-view event, with additional coverage by TNT Sports and Sky Sports in the UK.
