Badminton England Restructures for Olympic Success

Badminton England`s restructuring aims for Olympic success, introducing a new scoring system trial for enhanced competitiveness.

Badminton England is embarking on a transformative journey with a significant restructuring of its performance program. This new initiative introduces a coach-led, athlete-centric approach designed to maximize player potential and enhance success on the court. The revamped structure is part of a comprehensive ten-year strategy, focusing on three key areas: the Senior Programme, Junior Programme, and Para-badminton Programme. By placing coaches at the center of this new configuration, Badminton England aims to streamline athlete development and ensure a cohesive support system involving performance staff and fellow coaches.

The restructuring is particularly aimed at strengthening the transition between junior and senior elite programs, with the ultimate goal of achieving competitive success at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. To support this ambitious vision, Badminton England is actively recruiting for critical roles, including Head Coach positions and Programme Managers.

In addition to internal changes, discussions are underway regarding a proposed new scoring system in badminton. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has approved a trial of a 3×15 scoring format, where matches will consist of best-of-three games, each played to 15 points with a 21-point cap. This trial is set to take place in various tournaments from April to September/October 2025, aiming to assess its impact on match duration, player sustainability, and overall competitiveness. The new scoring system seeks to create more explosive and direct matches, potentially altering the current counterpunching style prevalent in men’s singles. However, reactions from players and coaches have been mixed, with concerns raised about match quality and the implications for strategies and player fitness.
