Hawaii braces for 35-foot waves as high surf warnings are issued, impacting navigation and coastal areas.

A powerful northwest swell is unleashing dangerously large waves across the north and west shores of Hawaii, with surf expected to peak on Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning effective from 6 p.m. today until 6 p.m. Friday for the north and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, and the north-facing shores of Maui. Surf heights are forecasted to reach an astonishing 25 to 35 feet along north-facing shores and 20 to 25 feet along west-facing shores.

These massive waves are creating hazardous conditions, including strong currents and dangerous breaking waves in channel entrances, making ocean navigation perilous. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to steer clear of affected shorelines and to postpone any boating plans involving these channels until conditions improve. Additionally, coastal overwash is a concern during high tide on Friday morning, potentially impacting low-lying areas.

While light southerly Kona winds will persist through the weekend, limited rainfall is expected, with some showers possible over leeward areas of Kauai and Oahu. The muggy conditions will continue until Sunday, when tradewinds are anticipated to return, bringing an increase in windward showers. Meanwhile, vog from Kilauea`s volcanic activity may cause hazy skies across the islands.
