In June 2024, Afghanistan achieved another milestone by eliminating Australia in the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup, marking their first-ever semifinal appearance in an ICC event. The team also triumphed over South Africa and Bangladesh in ODI series subsequent to the T20 World Cup.
Trott's extension is a testament to the team's progress and the board's anticipation of greater achievements in the coming year. Afghanistan has earned a spot in the ICC Champions Trophy by finishing in the Top 8 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 points table and will compete with seven other teams for the prestigious title.
Trott will also be tasked with preparing a strong T20I squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. However, he will miss the upcoming Tests and T20Is against Zimbabwe due to personal reasons, with Hamid Hassan and Nawroz Mangal taking over as head coach and assistant coach, respectively.
