Socceroos Star Harry Souttar Sidelined with Achilles Injury

Australian football has been dealt a significant blow with the news that Socceroos defender Harry Souttar will be out of action for up to 12 months due to a devastating Achilles tendon injury. The injury occurred during Sheffield United's Boxing Day loss to Burnley, where Souttar is currently on loan from Premier League club Leicester City.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder confirmed the injury, expressing his disappointment and praising Souttar's contributions to the team. `He is absolutely gutted,` Wilder said. `Devastated for him, he loved it here. Big disappointment to lose the big fella because he has been incredible.`

This injury is particularly timely and problematic for the Socceroos, who are in the midst of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Souttar has been a crucial figure in Australia's defense and had recently regained his form after joining Sheffield United in the off-season. His absence will be felt deeply, especially with only four qualifying matches remaining and Australia sitting second in Group C, nine points behind leaders Japan.

Souttar's history with significant injuries is not new; he previously ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in a qualifying match against Saudi Arabia almost exactly three years ago but managed to return in time to play a key role in the 2022 World Cup.
