The 2025 CrossFit season is poised to face significant challenges and changes, particularly regarding the location of the CrossFit Games. Following a tumultuous first year in Fort Worth, TX, which was overshadowed by the tragic death of athlete Lazar Ðukić, a return to this venue seems unlikely. Alternative locations such as Madison, WI, Carson, CA, and The Ranch in Aromas, CA, are being considered to distance the event from negative associations.

The structure of the season has also undergone modifications. Virtual in-affiliate Semifinals will now play a crucial role in determining which athletes qualify for the CrossFit Games. Additionally, judges will be required to complete the CrossFit L1, the 2025 Judges Course, and a new Advanced Judging course to ensure consistency and fairness. However, concerns linger regarding the video review system, especially after inconsistencies were noted during the 2024 Quarterfinals.

A notable trend is the increasing participation of elite CrossFit athletes in HYROX events. Athletes such as Nick Mathew, Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr, and Jay Crouch have been competing in these events, despite the significantly lower prize money compared to the CrossFit Games. The Professional Fitness Athletes Association (PFAA) is also taking on a more independent role, as CrossFit HQ has opted to run only one in-person event in 2025—the CrossFit Games—while other qualifying events will be independent.

The handling of Ðukić's death has sparked dissatisfaction among some athletes and fans, raising the possibility of a boycott of the 2025 CrossFit Games season. This discontent may lead some athletes to focus on other prestigious competitions, such as the Rogue Invitational, Dubai Fitness Championship, and TYR Wodapalooza. The registration totals for the Open will serve as a critical indicator of the season's momentum, with a significant drop potentially impacting the overall season.

On the team front, Brute Strength is set to have a formidable lineup for 2025, featuring James Sprague, the 2024 CrossFit Games champion, Dallin Pepper, the runner-up, and Jayson Hopper, who recently joined the camp. This makes Brute Strength home to three of the top four male athletes from the previous year's Games, positioning them as a strong contender in the upcoming season.
