Blue Jays Eye Turner and Martinez in Free Agency

Major League Baseball is buzzing with activity as teams prepare for the upcoming season. The Toronto Blue Jays are actively pursuing free agents Justin Turner and J.D. Martinez to fill the void left by departing players Matt Chapman and Brandon Belt. Turner, who had a stint with the Boston Red Sox after a successful nine-year run with the Los Angeles Dodgers, is expected to make a decision soon, with the San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs also in the mix for his services.

The Chicago Cubs have been proactive in enhancing their pitching staff, recently signing Japanese left-hander Shōta Imanaga to a four-year contract. Additionally, they are reportedly close to finalizing a one-year deal with reliever Hector Neris. However, the Cubs still seek a reliable bat to strengthen their lineup, having only acquired infielder Michael Busch thus far.

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Orioles are looking to improve their pitching roster and have shown interest in free-agent right-hander Michael Lorenzen. Lorenzen recently threw a bullpen session in California, which attracted attention from around 16 MLB teams, including the San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates, particularly interested in Noah Syndergaard, who is also seeking a fresh start after a challenging season.

Cody Bellinger is another name generating buzz, with a prevailing belief that he will re-sign with the Cubs if his asking price decreases. Bellinger has also been linked to the Blue Jays, Giants, and Seattle Mariners. Jorge Soler’s market is heating up as well, with multiple teams eyeing the free-agent hitter.

As teams gear up for the 2025 season, projected standings indicate that the San Diego Padres and Cleveland Guardians are expected to excel, with the Padres forecasted to win 93 games and the Guardians 92. The Baltimore Orioles are also anticipated to have a strong season with a projected 91 wins, while the Toronto Blue Jays may face challenges, with a forecast of only 74 wins.

Free agents from the previous year, such as Marcus Stroman and Jung Hoo Lee, are poised for significant seasons ahead. Stroman, who signed a two-year deal with the New York Yankees, needs to pitch at least 140 innings in 2025 to activate an $18 million player option for 2026. Lee, who joined the Giants on a six-year contract after a successful KBO career, will be crucial for the Giants' lineup after missing most of 2024 due to injury.
