Keely Hodgkinson Wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Keely Hodgkinson, the 22-year-old Olympic champion, has been crowned the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024. This prestigious award caps off an extraordinary year for Hodgkinson, who secured her maiden Olympic title in the 800m event at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a time of 1:56.72. She also successfully defended her European title in Rome earlier in the year.

Hodgkinson's achievement marks the fourth consecutive year a female athlete has won the award, following Mary Earps in 2023, Beth Mead in 2022, and Emma Raducanu in 2021. This is a historic milestone for the award.

In addition to Hodgkinson's success, the evening saw other notable recognitions. Sir Mark Cavendish, a legendary figure in British cycling, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his remarkable career, which includes breaking the record for the most Tour de France stage wins. Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows, Hodgkinson's coaches, were named Coach of the Year for their significant contributions to her and other athletes' successes.
