Cricket Australia Defends Stance on Afghanistan

Cricket Australia has vehemently defended its decision to not engage in bilateral series with Afghanistan, a stance that has been criticized by the outgoing ICC chief executive, Greg Barclay, as `virtue signalling.` The criticism stems from Australia's refusal to play Afghanistan in bilateral matches since the Taliban government banned women from participating in sports, although they do compete against Afghanistan in ICC World Cups.

Mike Baird, the chairman of Cricket Australia, emphasized the organization's commitment to its principles and its support for Afghan women's cricket. Baird highlighted an upcoming T20 exhibition match in Melbourne, where a team of female Afghan cricketers who fled their country will play against a Cricket without Borders XI. This event is seen as a celebration of women's cricket and a demonstration of Cricket Australia's support for the Afghan women who are prevented from playing in their home country.

Baird stated that Cricket Australia has `drawn a line` and is proud of its position, which includes supporting the Afghan women's cricket team and promoting women's cricket globally. Former Australian Test cricketer Mel Jones also underscored the importance of providing opportunities for Afghan women to play, noting that it helps them feel united and connected through the sport.
