Sermanni Calls for A-League Women Overhaul

Sermanni demands urgent reforms for A-League Women, highlighting low wages and the need for professionalism.

Interim Matildas head coach Tom Sermanni has raised the alarm over the state of the A-League Women, calling for urgent reforms to elevate the league`s professionalism. Despite Australia’s remarkable success on the international stage, the domestic league remains plagued by challenges, notably the lack of full-time professional status for most players. This reality is underscored by a recent survey from Professional Footballers Australia, revealing that a staggering 59% of players are considering leaving the sport due to low wages.

The upcoming 2025-26 season, branded as the Ninja A-League for sponsorship reasons, looms on the horizon with heightened expectations. As Australia recently topped the AFC Women’s Club Competitions Ranking for 2024-25, largely thanks to Melbourne City’s impressive run in the AFC Women’s Champions League, the pressure mounts for the league to match this international success with improved conditions at home. The push for a fully professional league by the 2026-27 season is gaining momentum, as players and advocates alike rally for a brighter future in women’s football.
