AFLW Off-Season Kicks Off After North Melbourneā€™s Grand Final Win

The 2024 AFLW off-season has officially begun, just days after North Melbourneā€™s historic maiden premiership win over the Brisbane Lions in the grand final. The off-season, which will run for 12 days, is expected to be a period of significant activity with various key events.

The Restricted Free Agency and Delisted Free Agency Period opened on December 4 and will continue until December 11. This period allows all 18 clubs to sign players who are without contracts from their current teams. A second Delisted Free Agency Period will follow from December 12-13, providing another opportunity for clubs to sign uncontracted players who were unable to secure trades[1].

The AFLW Trade Period, which started on December 5, promises to be highly active, with players like Charlie Rowbottom, Lily Mithen, Tara Bohanna, and Najwa Allen rumored to be changing clubs. This trade period will conclude on December 11, just five days before the 2024 National AFLW Draft[1].

The AFLW Draft, scheduled for December 16, will be a fully national event for the first time. Collingwood holds the first pick and is tipped to select Gippsland Powerā€™s Ash Centra. The draft order and picks for each club will be finalized after the Second Delisted Free Agency Period[1][2].

In addition to these major events, Geelong has already made significant moves by locking in key players Claudia Gunjaca, Zali Friswell, and Rachel Kearns before the trade period[5].
