Ezra Mam, a 21-year-old player for the Brisbane Broncos, has been at the center of a storm following a head-on crash in October. The incident revealed Mam's extensive and troubling driving history, including multiple suspensions and fines for various traffic offences such as speeding, failing to stop at a red light, and driving while using a phone. At the time of the crash, Mam's licence had already been suspended three times, and he was found to have illicit substances in his system.
The magistrate fined Mam $850 and suspended his licence for six months, a penalty that has been widely criticized as too lenient. Queenslandās Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has expressed her dissatisfaction with the penalty, stating it does not align with public expectations and is considering legislative changes to address such cases.
Mam has apologized for his actions, acknowledging the gravity of his mistakes and the potential harm caused to others. He has vowed to work on being a better person and a more responsible representative of his club and the game.
