The match, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, saw Fonseca bounce back from losing the first set to secure the victory. This win was particularly notable as it came in front of tennis legend Rafael Nadal, who was in attendance.
Fonseca's path to the title was marked by his undefeated run throughout the tournament, finishing with a 5-0 record. He had previously beaten Tien in the group stage and also in the junior US Open final in 2023. Fonseca's victory earned him a tournament-record prize money of $526,480 and will see him start 2025 ranked No. 145, a significant jump from his starting position outside the Top 700 in 2024.
`I was really nervous before the match. I knew it was going to be so difficult,` Fonseca said post-match. `I played a final against Learner in juniors [at the 2023 US Open] and I know the way he can play. He is such a nice guy and a great player, so I knew it was going to be difficult, mentally and physically.`
Fonseca's performance in the final was characterized by his ability to stay strong on serve and become more aggressive after the second set, which ultimately led to his victory.
