Max Purcell Faces 18-Month Suspension in Tennis

Max Purcell receives an 18-month suspension for doping violations, while Alex de Minaur advances in the Madrid Open.

Australian tennis player Max Purcell has accepted an 18-month suspension from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) due to violations related to anti-doping regulations. The suspension stems from Purcell receiving two intravenous infusions that exceeded the 100mL limit, a breach of the sport`s strict doping guidelines. The ban is backdated to include the time served since his provisional suspension began in December 2024, concluding on June 11, 2026. Additionally, Purcell will forfeit all results and prize money earned from December 16, 2024, to February 3, 2025.

In more positive news for Australian tennis, Alex de Minaur showcased his skills at the Madrid Open, advancing to the next round after defeating Canada`s Denis Shapovalov with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the third round. While specific performance details were not disclosed, de Minaur`s victory adds to his growing reputation on the ATP Tour.

As of April 29, 2025, no further match results, player statistics, or attendance figures for Australian players or events have been reported. For more details on Purcell`s suspension, visit ITIA and for additional context on the ban, check out UPI.
