Maro Itoje Named England Captain for Six Nations 2025

England is gearing up for the 2025 Guinness Men's Six Nations Championship with head coach Steve Borthwick announcing a 36-player training squad. Maro Itoje has been appointed as the new captain, taking over from Jamie George, who will remain as a vice-captain alongside Ellis Genge. Itoje, who has earned 88 caps for England, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the role, having previously led the England U20 team to victory in the Junior World Championship and played for the British & Irish Lions.

The training squad consists of 20 forwards and 16 backs, including two uncapped players, Oscar Beard and Cadan Murley, both from Harlequins. The team will convene at Pennyhill Park on January 21 before traveling to Girona for preparations ahead of their opening match against defending champions Ireland on February 1 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Tom Willis and Max Ojomoh are also in contention for call-ups, with Willis noted for his impressive form and Ojomoh recognized for his handling skills and running lines.

England's recent performance has been challenging, having suffered five consecutive Test losses before securing a win against Japan. This year is pivotal for Borthwick and the squad as they aim to improve their standing in the tournament. The return of Alex Mitchell from injury is anticipated to enhance the team's pace and fluidity in attack. England's fixtures in the Six Nations include tough matches against Ireland, France, Scotland, Italy, and Wales, making every game crucial for their campaign.
