RFU confirms longer bans for players and coaches

Longer punishments will be imposed on players and coaches who abuse referees in England as the Rugby Football Union attempts to prevent more match officials from leaving the field.

Since 49% of referees reported being "abused or disrespected" during the previous season, the RFU has taken action.


"Unacceptable" and "undoubtedly impacting" on hiring and retaining officials, it stated.

Referee Wayne Barnes of the World Cup final said that "vile" criticism on social media was the reason he decided to retire last year.
