Carlsen Triumphs in Paris Freestyle Chess Grand Slam

Magnus Carlsen wins the Paris Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, defeating Nakamura, while Vietnam excels in youth competitions.

GM Magnus Carlsen showcased his dominance at the 2025 Paris Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, clinching the title by defeating GM Hikaru Nakamura with a score of 1.5-0.5. Carlsen`s strategic prowess left Nakamura with minimal opportunities, earning the Norwegian grandmaster a substantial prize of $200,000.

In the battle for third place, GM Fabiano Caruana overcame GM Vincent Keymer, also with a score of 1.5-0.5, securing $100,000 and a coveted spot in the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Slam. Meanwhile, GM Arjun Erigaisi claimed fifth place by besting GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with the same score, pocketing $50,000. GM Ian Nepomniachtchi finished seventh after defeating GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov 2-0, earning $30,000 for his efforts.

In other chess news, Vietnam swept the podium at the World Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship, with Nguyen Nam Kiet emerging as the champion. Additionally, the 22nd Bangkok Chess Club Open 2025 is currently underway, with round 4 scheduled for April 16, 2025. Kazakhstan also made headlines by dominating the FIDE World Cadet & Youth Rapid Chess 2025, winning six gold medals, showcasing their rising talent in the chess world.
