Nigeria`s Super Eagles End 2024 with Lowest FIFA Ranking Since 2018

Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles, have concluded the year 2024 with their worst FIFA ranking in six years. According to the latest FIFA rankings, the Super Eagles are now ranked 44th globally, a significant drop from their previous position of 36th before the November rankings.

This decline is largely attributed to the team's underwhelming performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, where they failed to secure a win in four matches, leaving them second from the bottom in their qualifying group. Despite this, the Super Eagles managed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after winning their qualifying group.

In Africa, the Super Eagles retained their fifth position, behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria. The team's mixed year included reaching the final of the delayed 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, but their recent performances have not reflected the same level of success.

The Super Eagles won nine matches, drew four, and lost five in 2024. Their struggles, particularly against teams like Benin Republic and Rwanda, have been a significant factor in their ranking drop.

As the year ends, the focus shifts to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in 2025, where the Super Eagles will aim to improve their standings and regain their competitive edge.
