Makhachev submits Poirier in gruelling title fight

In the fifth round of an intense battle to keep his lightweight title, Islam Makhachev submitted Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 in New Jersey.

Russian Makhachev, who is 32 years old, used his superior grappling skills to secure a d'arce choke, which forced American Poirier to give up.

Makhachev won the fight at the Prudential Center, marking his third defense of the title, while Poirier, 35, made hints about retirement following his defeat in what was probably his last attempt to become the undisputed champion.
