Joveljić Joins Sporting KC in Historic MLS Trade

Dejan Joveljić`s historic transfer to Sporting KC and Orlando City`s preseason victory highlight MLS`s growing competitiveness.

Sporting Kansas City has made headlines by acquiring Serbian striker Dejan Joveljić from LA Galaxy in a groundbreaking $4 million cash trade, marking the first cash-for-player transaction in Major League Soccer history. Joveljić, who has signed a three-year Designated Player contract through 2027 with an option for 2028, is expected to significantly enhance Kansas City`s attacking prowess after a remarkable 2024 season with the Galaxy, where he netted 21 goals and provided eight assists across all competitions, including six goals during the MLS Cup Playoffs that helped secure the Galaxy`s sixth MLS Cup title.

In preseason action, Orlando City SC showcased their competitive spirit by defeating Brazilian powerhouse Atlético Mineiro in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless draw in the FC Series, part of Inter&Co Soccer Week. Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese emerged as the hero, saving the decisive penalty and highlighting the growing technical and tactical capabilities of MLS teams against traditional South American rivals.

Meanwhile, Louisville City FC, while not part of MLS, began their preseason with a 3-1 defeat to Austin FC. Jansen Wilson made an impression with a stunning long-range goal, indicating his potential as he transitions into a striker role this season.
