Fletcher`s Late Winner Propels Wrexham to Second in League One

:In a thrilling match at the SToK Racecourse, Wrexham secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Wigan, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from substitute Steven Fletcher. This win has propelled Wrexham into second place in the League One table, just one point behind leaders Birmingham City.

The first half was marked by a lack of clear-cut chances for both teams, with Wigan's pressing making life difficult for the hosts. Wrexham's best opportunities came from set-pieces, but neither Paul Mullin nor James McClean could test Sam Tickle in the Wigan goal.

After the break, Wigan came out strong and hit the woodwork early on through Dale Taylor, but Jensen Weir missed the follow-up, blazing the ball over the bar. This near-miss seemed to spark Wrexham into action, and they took the lead on the hour mark. Ryan Barnett made a surging run and fired a left-footed shot past Tickle, aided by a slight deflection.

However, Wigan leveled the game in the 79th minute when Joe Hugill headed Silko Thomas' cross past goalkeeper Mark Howard. The match seemed destined for a draw until Fletcher's dramatic intervention. The substitute striker controlled a cross from James McClean and fired home a stoppage-time winner, securing all three points for Wrexham.

This victory was particularly significant as it allowed Wrexham to capitalize on promotion rivals Wycombe and Birmingham dropping points. Ryan Barnett's performance was also noteworthy, although Fletcher's late goal stole the headlines.

Wrexham will next face Barnsley on New Year's Day at Oakwell, looking to continue their strong form in the promotion race.
