Mariners Make History with A-League Women’s Triumph

Central Coast Mariners claim their first A-League Women’s title in a thrilling shootout against Melbourne Victory, led by Isabel Gomez.

The Central Coast Mariners have etched their name in the annals of Australian football by clinching their first A-League Women’s title in a nail-biting grand final against Melbourne Victory. The match, held at AAMI Park, unfolded with high drama as the Mariners took the lead through Isabel Gomez early in the second half. However, the Victory, resilient and determined, equalized in the 80th minute thanks to Claudia Bunge, sending the match into a tense penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Melbourne Victory, who had been riding a club-record 15-match unbeaten streak, faced an unexpected setback when Alana Jancevski struck the crossbar with their opening penalty. Despite successful conversions from Emily Gielnik, Alex Chidiac, Holly Furphy, and captain Kayla Morrison, the Mariners showcased remarkable composure, converting all their penalties. Bianca Galic sealed the victory with a decisive final kick, securing a 5-4 win in the shootout.

This victory is particularly significant as the Mariners finished fourth in the regular season, while Melbourne Victory had placed second. The Mariners had previously defeated premiers Melbourne City in the semi-finals, thanks to another stellar performance by Isabel Gomez, who scored the extra-time goal that propelled them to this historic final.
