Australia Dominates England in Women`s Ashes T20 Opener

Australia`s women`s team defeated England by 57 runs in the first T20, retaining the Ashes with an 8-0 lead.

Australia`s women`s cricket team showcased their dominance in the first T20 international against England, winning by 57 runs in Sydney. With this victory, Australia retained the Ashes, extending their lead to 8-0 in the multi-format series. The Australian innings was anchored by Beth Mooney, who delivered a stellar performance, scoring 75 runs off 47 balls, supported by aggressive contributions from her teammates.

England`s bowling and fielding fell short, marred by early mistakes, including two wides from Freya Kemp in the opening over and a crucial dropped catch by Lauren Bell that allowed Mooney to escape on 16. Australia set a formidable target, finishing their innings at 198-7.

In response, England`s chase got off to a disastrous start, losing both openers for zero runs, including Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who was dismissed on the first ball. However, Sophia Dunkley provided a glimmer of hope with a thrilling 59 runs off just 30 balls, featuring six fours and four sixes. Despite her efforts, England struggled with the uneven bounce of the pitch, leading to a series of wickets falling, including Dunkley, who was bowled by Tahlia McGrath.

Ultimately, England managed to score only 141-6, falling well short of the target with four overs remaining. The series now stands at 8-0 in favor of Australia, leaving England with the slim chance of salvaging a draw at 8-8, as they did in 2023. The next T20 international is set for Thursday, January 23, in Canberra, where England will aim to secure their first points in the series and restore some pride.
