Bumrah`s Injury Clouds India`s Champions Trophy Plans

Jasprit Bumrah's participation in upcoming cricket tournaments is in jeopardy due to a back injury sustained during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Despite an impressive performance where he bowled 151.2 overs and took 32 wickets at an average of 13.06, Bumrah experienced back spasms during the final Test against Australia, preventing him from bowling on the crucial last day. This injury has led to his exclusion from India's T20 series against England, raising concerns about his availability for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed the announcement of the preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy, awaiting updates on Bumrah's fitness alongside Kuldeep Yadav. Although selectors have agreed to include both players in the squad, there are indications that Bumrah may miss the group-stage matches of the tournament. His injury, characterized by swelling in the back, necessitates further treatment at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, which could also result in his absence from the ODI series against England next month.

Bumrah's absence would significantly weaken India's bowling attack, with former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir commenting that the team would be reduced to 40-50 percent of its strength without him. In 2024, Bumrah had a stellar season, leading international cricket with 86 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 13.76, and was named Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup for his outstanding performance.
