Jason Gillespie Resigns as Pakistan Coach

Jason Gillespie Resigns as Pakistan Coach

In a significant development for Pakistani cricket, Jason Gillespie has resigned from his role as the Test team coach of Pakistan. This decision comes after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PC failed to review the contract of Tim Nielsen, who was appointed as the high performance coach on Gillespie's recommendation.

Gillespie's contract was set to expire in 2026, but his resignation was prompted by the PCB's decision to absolve him of the powers of team selection and involvement in pitch preparation. This move follows a similar resignation by Gary Kirsten, who had joined as the white ball side's coach along with Gillespie before the T20 World Cup 2024. Kirsten had also cited differences with the PCB on matters of authority.

Aaqib Javed, currently the interim coach of Pakistan's white ball outfits, has been appointed to replace Gillespie for the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. Pakistan is already in South Africa for the white-ball leg of the tour, which will be followed by the Test matches starting from December 26.

This change in coaching staff highlights the ongoing tensions between foreign coaches and the PCB, particularly since Aaqib Javed was granted full powers including team selection.
