Birmingham2022: Nigeria Clinches Five Medals on Day Seven

In a space of 30mins across two venues at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, two Nigerian ladies, Goodness Nwachukwu and  Folashade Oluwafemiayo broke World Records in their respective events, winning two GOLD medals for Nigeria.

 

In Powerlifting,  Folashade Oluwafemiayo broke her own World Record in the women's Heavyweight Powerlifting event, lifting a series of 130kg, 150kg 155kg to score a cumulative 123.4 points to clinch GOLD for Nigeria.

 

While another Nigerian, Bose Omolayo won a Silver medal in the same event, finishing second behind her compatriot to make it a Nigerian 1-2. Omolayo lifted 145kg and scored 115.2 points to also get on the podium.

 

In Athletics,  Nigeria's Goodness Chiemerie Nwachukwu was on a different level, clinching the GOLD medal in the women's Discus F42-44/61-64 event with an unprecedented throw of 36.56m. She was so good that 4 of her throws could have separately been World Records.

 

Earlier on,  Innocent Nnamdi won Nigeria's first medal in Powerlifting, winning Bronze in the men's Lightweight category. Nnamdi lifted a 2nd round attempt of 190kg to finish 3rd ahead of his compatriot, Thomas Kufre who finished 4th lifting 180kg.

 

Team Nigeria clinched a total of 5 medals ( 2 Gold, 2 Silver and a Bronze) on Thursday to move up to 8 positions on the medals table with a total of 13 medals.
