Wembanyama put out a call on social media inviting fans to meet him at the park to play chess. Despite the cold and rainy weather, he spent an hour from about 10-11 a.m. playing four games, winning two and losing two. This impromptu chess session was a result of his efforts to find time to play during the team's stay in New York, following their games against the New York Knicks on Christmas and the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night.
The event drew a couple of dozen fans who braved the weather to play and take photos with Wembanyama. After the session, he suggested an NBA players-only chess tournament on social media, with proceeds going to the charity of the winner's choice.
Wembanyama, who is averaging 25.2 points and 10.1 rebounds this season, continues to make an impact both on and off the court.
