Ashwin`s Sudden Retirement Shakes Indian Cricket

:Ravichandran Ashwin's sudden retirement from international cricket has sent shockwaves through the Indian cricket fraternity. The 38-year-old off-spinner, who has been a stalwart for India, decided to call time on his career after the third Test against Australia in Brisbane. This decision comes as a surprise, but it was reportedly influenced by his limited opportunities in the playing XI during the ongoing tour of Australia.

Ashwin's career has been marked by numerous accolades, including 765 international wickets and 3503 runs, including six centuries. He is the second-most successful spinner in Test history after Muttiah Muralitharan. However, his recent struggles with selection and the perceived lack of respect from the team management have been cited as reasons for his retirement.

Former India spinner Erapalli Prasanna expressed his disappointment over Ashwin's treatment, stating, `India didn't treat Ashwin well. He was actually very good even when he was playing away.` Prasanna emphasized that Ashwin's retirement will leave a `massive void` in Indian cricket, highlighting his unique ability to manage the middle overs, a crucial phase in Test cricket[3].

Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin's long-time bowling partner, acknowledged the end of their era but remained pragmatic about the situation. `Move on toh hona hi padega (one must move on),` Jadeja said, adding that Indian cricket will find a suitable replacement for Ashwin[2].

The retirement of Ashwin has also raised questions about the future of other veteran players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both players have been under scrutiny for their recent performances, with Kohli averaging 25.06 and Rohit averaging 26.39 this year. Their relevance to India's plans for the next cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) is a topic of discussion among fans and pundits[1].
