Liverpool Edges Southampton in EFL Cup Quarter-Final

Liverpool secured a spot in the EFL Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over manager-less Southampton. The match, played at St Mary’s Stadium, saw Liverpool’s second string lineup prevail despite a late rally from the hosts.

Darwin Nunez opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a long pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold to fire in his fourth goal of the season. Harvey Elliott doubled the lead just before the interval, marking his first start of the season with a goal after fine work by Cody Gakpo.

Southampton, led by caretaker manager Simon Rusk following the dismissal of Russell Martin, found some momentum in the second half. Cameron Archer reduced the deficit with a fine curled shot in the 59th minute, but despite late chances, the Saints could not find the equalizer.

Liverpool’s victory sees them reach a record 20th League Cup semi-final, with the team remaining in contention for all four major trophies this season. Harvey Elliott was named the player of the match for his all-action display.
