Luxembourg's rise to brink of history

The 15th of December 1982 was damp and windy at Wembley. It was equally stormy for Luxembourg's players, who took another beating. This time, England set a European Championship qualifying record with a 9-0 victory, with striker Luther Blissett scoring a hat-trick.

A Luxembourg international player's life has remained largely unchanged in previous and subsequent years. They mostly worked part-time and stumbled from one crushing defeat to the next.

The Grand Duchy has the record for the most World Cup and European campaigns without qualifying. Until 2008, 104 World Cup matches had yielded only eight points. But things are changing, and they are only two games away from their first major event.
